With the hot topic of eliminating Dont Ask, Dont Tell (DADT) from the military, we wanted to get an opinion from one of our own readers who’s in the military and what they believe will happen when Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is officially eliminated! Here’s his perspective:

Lady Gaga on the MTV VMA's Red Carpet with servicemembers impacted by DADT
Wow 5 years in and I can actually see the pot of gold and the end of the rainbow!! Yep, that’s right Don’t ask Don’t tell finally gets her day in court. DADT has kept a lot of secrets, just that, secrets. But with the proper rulings Gays in the military will finally be able to come out the closet! And it just doesn’t stop there, or does it? While having a round robin conversation about various issues in life amongst Straight army soldiers the topic of gays came up. Of course I had to remain the “mole” in the conversation not really offering any opinions that would out me or indicate that I’m a traitor, or “fag-lover”. They brought up a lot of important issues that I didn’t even think about. One said “you know if you give gays an inch they’ll take a mile. Dudes coming to 1600 formation in drag. And what we supposed to do accept that shit?” Another soldier commented, “yep, because if we don’t they’ll take it up with the IG ( Inspector General handles EO complaints). But my take on doing away with DADT is kind of shocked, scared, and happy.
A lot of mixed emotions. Most males that are gay in the military are a part of Combat units where masculinity is a must and anything “fem” is considered weak. And what man gay or straight wants to feel weak? When the issues arose during my pre-deployment training a senior officer said that he doesn’t care if gays come out, but just not in his unit. Maybe in a medical or desk jockey unit, where there are a lot of females. Indicating that females are more tolerant towards gays.
My PROS and CONS of DADT:
PROS
- Sharing my insurance with my spouse.
- My spouse has the same benefits as an Army wife would.
- Able to live my life truthfully without having to worry about being kicked out the Army for being gay.
- Society is moving forward with total acceptance towards gays.
CONS
- Gay soldiers being targeted for coming out.
- Gay soldiers being put into the “GAY” unit. (G-Unit!!!!!!)
- Gay soldiers not being allowed to be transgendered.
- The military will not pay for adoptions as they would for straight couples.
All in all, DADT was put into effect during the presidency of President Clinton. He was pressured by senior military officials at the time to combat gays in the military. However that was 17 years ago when being gay was still something we kept “in the closet”. In today’s military we are fighting a force that only mission is to eliminate to great Ole US of A. Gay or Straight. To speak on the views of men and women’s role in other countries where we are fighting you’ll be in total amazement.
As far as for me I’ll wait on telling my military coming out story on Oprah. I don’t intend on immediately coming out as soon as the gavel is hammered down. Taking DADT away will bring a lot opposition from all sides. There will always be amendments to the policy. Gay marriage, benefits, marriage conferences, adoption, divorce, in-fidelity, these are all things the military has policies against or for. DADT encompasses more than just being able to be gay and serve. There’s more, a whole lot more to the equation. And I’m unsure if I’m ready to go down that road. Do I get a divorce from my “wife” and then marry my “boyfriend”, and then what does that say about my character and morals? To speak on how the military thinks I live my life is also another show for Oprah.

“The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have
stopped leading them.
They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded
that you do not care.
Either case is a failure in leadership.”
