Support for Haiti Earthquake Victims

earthquake2

Yesterday, a 7.0 -magnitude Earthquake struck 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As many as 3 million are believed to be affected by the quake. As of right now there could be thousands trapped under debris as search and rescue has begun in the devastated city.

Many government agencies including the U.S. have offered to assist with humanitarian aid but the coordination of where and the how to send it is taking some time. What is most needed at the time is a hospital ship, Haitian authorities stated. The city’s airport is closed, there is a lack of ligthing, and many buildings are blocking major transportation routes.

Haitian born Singer Wyclef John who is also the founder of the Yele Haiti Relief Charity has started a campaign to raise money for the earthquake victims and you can assist by texting “Yele” to 501501 which will autmatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. The charge will appear on your phone bill. You can also visit Yele.org and click donate to assist.

Wyclef tweeted earlier today that he was on his way to the Dominican Republic to get to Haiti. For those that are looking for family and friends in Haiti, you can contact the U.S. State Department Operations Center at 1-888-407-4747. Our prayers are with Haiti, the victims, and family and friends.
