In a city as colorful as Atlanta, it’s still easy to feel secluded from others who share a similar story as you. No matter if you are in your early 20’s or your late 40’s, it’s still important for black SGL (same gender loving) men to have a safe space where they can learn to connect with themselves and others. This past June, my friends and I were in search of that connection and that’s when we came across The Deeper Love Project.
DLP was founded in 1997 by Craig Washington and their goal is to provide black SGL men with the tools that are necessary for transforming our lives and our communities. Discussions on sexual health, cultural awareness, leadership training and community building are only a few of the ways The Deeper Love Project accomplishes this transformation. Based out of Aid Atlanta (aidatlanta.org), DLP has provided me with the affirmations that are necessary for me to appreciate my personal qualities to, in turn, appreciate and nurture the qualities of others.
One of the ways DLP helped me become a better person was through their retreats, which are held monthly. The two day retreat, held on the 26th and 27th of September, left me with the realization that there is always room for change and growth. The sessions within the retreat spanned across the groups sexual history (we created sexual life map), exploring the stereotypes of being black/ gay / black and gay, and innovative methods to sustaining a healthier life both mentally and sexually.
I think the entity that affected me the most was being able to hear different experiences and perspectives from nine other men that came from different walks of life. No voice was the same nor did anyone’s voice go unheard. I left feeling affirmed to be open with myself and to also strive towards being a better person so that I could potentially be an example for others. The self reflection that came from this retreat alone let me know that there is still a lot of work to be done within one’s self and the community. I will definitely be a part of other retreats held in the future.
